Since I’m really bad about staying active, I thought a change of subjects might inspire me. Sure. Yeah. We’ll see.
“And then- oh you won’t believe what she said- she said that he was never even mine to begin with!! So I just left. he wasn’t worth fighting over.” You concluded your story and he rolled his eyes, exasperated. He lifted his head off his hands and shrugged his shoulders, in a rather comic “waddaitelya.”
“So anyway,” you started again after you two got your coffees, “what do you think?”
“I think you should stop dating other men and allow me to take you out like I’ve been telling you,” he said, only half joking.
“Oh not that again!” It was your turn to roll your eyes. “But I’m starting to think that you’re right,” you said, directing it to your coffee.
He just nodded sagely, trying his best not to show a small smile of satisfaction.
You look over at your half-finished paper on your laptop. Then down at your shoes and ready purse. Then back at the paper. “You know,” you told your laptop “you aren’t making this any easier.”
The paper would have to wait, you decided. The paper was due at midnight, and it was only noon. Besides, this was your friend’s party, and she especially asked you to attend…kinda. Anyway, you thought, I’ll be back with plenty of time to finish.
You started heading to the door, but something made you turn back. It wasn’t your intense feeling of guilt. “—ah!! Where do you think you’re going?” your father demanded.
“Oh, just off to my friend’s house, Abeoji.”
“I had also thought you were supposed to go there,” he said as you turned around to see him in the hall, “but then I happened to notice something rather interesting in your room.” He gestured for you to sit down on the couch. “Do you know what it was?”
You shook your head.
“No?” he continued. “It was a half-done essay with yesterday’s date on it. I assumr that it was supposed to be finished before today, then.”
“No, Abeoji, it’s due by midnight,” you said, looking at the floor.
“Well then, you have a lot of work to do.”
You got up with a pout and sat down in front of your laptop with a dramatic sigh, making it very obvious that you weren’t happy with this plan. Even now, the phone calls started to come, but you ignored them. “Stupid university,” you muttered under your breath.

“Whose genius idea was it to hold a photoshoot outside in the dead of winter?” you say crossly. “It’s absolutely freezing.”
The poor intern had no idea what to say. “Uh….it was….your idea…boss,” she stuttured, her teeth chattering so much she could barely talk through fear and cold.
You look at her sharply. “Go inside and get warm before you die,” you tell her. She only nods and rushes away. “Alright, who is next?” you call at the tent where the models were getting ready.
“Lee ChiHoon, you’re up. YoungGi, you’re on deck,” your assistant announces. He hands you your camera and you go into full creative director and photographer mode.
Chihoon is a seasoned model, so the shoot goes smoothly. You call out posing guidance only occasionally. “Try to seem as if you’re really cold.” Chihoon adjusts his face to the new instructions. “Colder,” you say. More change. “Even colder.”
“Yah — noona,” Chihoon suddenly replies. “This isn’t acting anymore. This cold face is about as real as it gets .”
You glare at him. “I think I suddenly feel colder,” Chihoon says meekly.
“White pawn? How am I a pawn? I’m a person.”
The knight got off of his horse leaned nonchalantly against it. Immediately, the horse stopped stamping its feet and froze into a position much like the chess piece I knew it should have been. It also faded from red to black. The boy, young man really, had no armor, only a rather odd half suit. He didn’t say anything else, so I assumed it was safe to walk past him.
“Where do you think you’re going, pawn?” he said, still not looking up.
“I told you I’m not a pawn,” I tried to make the knight understand. “I had fallen through a looking glass and the queen told me that I had to cross to the eighth row so I can get back to my world.”
He sighed, as if he were bored. Then he started gently kicking the ground. ‘Kicking the ground?’ I thought. ‘Is he shy? He seems…upset…’
“You started playing this game when you landed in this world, he explained. “And you bear the mark of the white queen.” He looked at me with such intensity that I took a step back. “When you, a pawn, reach the 8th row, you’ll be crowned another queen.”
He took a step forward, still staring at me. “And I’m afraid I simply can’t allow that, Alice.”
You hear the front door open as your mom comes home. “I’m home!!” she calls. With a sigh, you close your book and venture out from underneath the blanket, hoping to steal some snacks before the groceries are put away.
As you go towards the kitchen, you notice something new on the bench in the hallway. “Umma, where did you get this bunny?” you ask as pick up a cute stuffed rabbit. It has a huge head, shortish ears, and it looks warmer than you felt. You look over to thermostat, wondering how 19°C (~68°F) is considered an acceptable indoor temperature. You turn the rabbit over, as if expecting the secret to warmth to be written on the back, and see a note drop out of the rabbit’s paws.
‘I think I may like you’ it reads.
Your mom comes into the hallway to see you concentrating on the stuffed animal. “A very sweet boy asked me to give that to you,” she says.
You look at the paper again in surprise. “What was his name?”
“Well, he asked me not to tell.”

Q:I read your tag post, and I'm so happy that you love His Dark Materials! I absorbed those books as a child, and I still gush about them to random people.
Yup!!! I read a lot, and that series is one of my favorite. I like how it turns tradition on its head, and Lyra is one of my favorite protagonists. Also, I really really want a daemon
